WASHINGTON – Aug. 15, 2007 – The Arab American Institute (AAI) has kicked off a series of civic and political empowerment workshops for Arab Americans in Iowa as part of its Yalla Vote 2008 political mobilization campaign.  AAI has made Iowa an integral part of its national strategy to mobilize Arab Americans for the 2008 presidential campaign season, and this week organized well-attended political training workshops in Cedar Rapids and Cedar Falls.  A third workshop will be held in Des Moines on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. at Hotel Fort Des Moines.

The Cedar Rapids event drew over 50 community members and featured presidential campaign representatives, local party officials, and the district representative for former U.S.

Representatives from
John Edwards’s and Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns spoke about their candidates and different ways to become involved in a campaign, while the Linn County Democratic and Republican Party chairs each spoke about ways to become involved in local politics.  Gary Grant, the former Leach aide, gave a presentation on how to hold effective meetings with elected officials and candidates.  Tuesday’s workshop in Cedar Falls featured a representative from Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, as well as Cedar Falls Mayor Jon Crews and State Rep. Bob Kressig (D-19th).

The Des Moines workshop will include a Romney campaign representative as well as
Nader Halawa, who worked on Howard Dean’s campaign in Des Moines in the last presidential election cycle.  As in Cedar Rapids and Cedar Falls, the training in Des Moines will focus on opportunities to become involved in campaigns, how to raise issues of importance to Arab Americans in the presidential campaigns and how to become politically involved at the local level.
