Bolton UN Appointment: Empire Interests Supersede US National Interests ... Again By Hassan El-Najjar Al-Jazeerah, August 1, 2005
Today, President Bush has appointed John Bolton as the US Ambassador to the UN, ignoring the majority in the US Senate, who have opposed this appointment so far. Bush took advantage of the Congressional recess to announce his decision. For students of US society, the Bolton UN appointment is a confirmation of the prominence of the interests of the Empire over the national interests of the United States. He jumped over the US Senate, which has opposed the appointment, just as he jumped over the UN Security Council (UNSC) and went to war on Iraq despite the Council's opposition. Bolton does not like the UN as the world democratic political institution that works for and preserves the world peace. He wants to "repair" it in a way that it won't be allowed to contradict with the plans of the Empire rulers for permanent war. After the "illegal" (using Annan's word) invasion of Iraq had been completed in 2003, the UNSC "behaved" itself and rubber-stamped its approval to the US-UK occupation, without setting a date for ending it. Thus, the Council confirmed its status as a tool in the hands of the Empire rulers. The Empire policy of permanent war, as advocated by the so-called neo-cons, does not serve the US national interests. The US has been sinking heavily in debt, which has exceeded $7.84 trillion (until today), its armed forces have been spread thin all over the world, its deficits have been increasing, and its currency has been losing much of its value. The United States has been pushed by the Empire war planners to become their world's imperialist power, which has increased hostility towards Americans all over the world. The Bolton UN appointment is another evidence that the Empire rulers do not mind jumping over legal institutions, as they did to the UNSC and the US Senate. It's time for Americans to defend US national interests, particularly whenever these interests are threatened or compromised. The US Senate can lead the way by a bi-partisan stance in
opposition to the President's decision. I hope that it won't rubber-stamp
approval to the Bolton appointment the way the UNSC did in the case of the US-UK
invasion and occupation of Iraq. |
